AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)

This is our most comprehensive CPR course with instruction focusing in the following areas: Basic Life Support (BLS) including adult and pediatric CPR, use of a bag valve mask (BVM), foreign-body airway obstruction, and use of Automated External Defibrillation (AED) devices in conjunction with CPR. This class is targeted towards professional rescuers, including pre-hospital care providers such as EMTs, paramedics, flight nurses, and law enforcement officers with an advanced level of training, as well as allied healthcare professionals, RNs, and physicians. This course is also appropriate for individuals seeking to utilize their training to enter these fields.

  • Student materials will be provided the day of the course
  • A written exam and skills evaluation (without assistance) are required to ensure proficiency
  • A certification card, valid for two (2) years will be issued upon completion of this course

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students should successfully:

  • Describe the purpose of high quality CPR
  • Describe the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize the need for CPR
  • Recognize the need for early defibrillation
  • Perform high quality single-rescuer CPR on an adult, child and infant
  • Perform high-quality CPR as part of a team
  • Give effective ventilations using a bag valve mask (BVM) for all age groups
  • Demonstrate the use of an AED
  • Describe when and how to help a choking adult or child
  • Demonstrate how to help a choking infant

Course Length: Initial: 3 ½ – 4 hours
Refresher: 2 – 2 ½ hours
Certification Period: Two (2) years
