Heartsaver® First Aid

When properly applied, first aid skills can save lives and reduce recovery time. This course was designed for those in the community and the workplace who have a duty or a desire to respond to an emergency. Instruction covers all areas of the administration of first aid, inclusive of: legal aspects, emergency response, bleeding, shock, and soft-tissue injuries, bone, joint, and muscle injuries, medical emergencies, and heat and cold-related illnesses and injuries.

  • Student materials will be provided the day of the course
  • A written exam is available if required by the student’s employer
  • A certification card, valid for two (2) years will be issued upon completion of this course

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students should successfully:

  • Describe role of the first aid provider including priorities and responsibilities
  • Identify legal questions applicable to the first aid provider
  • Describe the key steps of first aid
  • Demonstrate the proper removal of protective gloves
  • Identify the main problem
  • Identify the appropriate course of action for life-threatening conditions including: chest pain, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, stroke, and shock
  • Demonstrate the use of an epinephrine adminsitration device
  • Demonstrate the control of bleeding and bandaging
  • Recognize and identify common injuries and illnesses
  • Identify resources for injury and illness prevention

Course Length: 3 hours
Certification Period: Two (2) years
